    Dyneema, Amsteel...?

I need something to rig up my new tarp, but I don't know anything about the various guyline options. What's the difference between Dyneema, Amsteel, paracord, etc.? What's the best (light, strong, not too expensive...)? And where can I order some quickly? I was going to order the 100' spool of Dyneema from Warbonnet, but I don't think it would arrive in time (have a trip planned for the 28th). Thanks for any info/advice!

    Try dutch over at dutchware...

many use zing it or lash it...both are no stretchy and tough as nails.

    also he ships crazy fast.

I think you can also find zing-it at Lowes or Home Depot. I found some zing-it knock off stuff (poly no stretching) thin cordage at wal-mart i used tie outs once...works great- look around where the tarps and auto tiedown stuff is.

I've found paracord way too stretchy to secure and keep a tarp taunt enough.

For a tarp a lot of people like ZingIt - if you want to be able to splice it.

I really like Z-Line - it holds knots very well, and doesn't tangle like ZingIt will, but it's dyneema strands with a dacron sheath - so no splicing.

What's the difference between Zing-it and Lash-it? Besides the color.

Same line different market. One is marketed to arborists one to fishermen.

Thanks for the info, but I just heard back from Warbonnet and they were able to ship my stuff super fast. Should be here by the end of the week!

For the type of loads the line will be under with tarp use, you can safely use knots in zing-it or lash-it, in case you're not interested in learning to splice. Just beware that dyneema is slippery stuff so knot accordingly.

I've watched a few youtube videos on splicing and it doesn't look TOO difficult. Kind of excited to learn, but is there a big learning curve? I mean, will it take me awhile to get it right?

Assuming you're attempting to copy good techniques and don't overlook the little details, the first couple of splices normally take a little longer, but you should be able to splice up what you need for a tarp in an evening. Maybe a long evening the first time around.

If you have problems, don't fight it and waste a lot of time. Post up here and ask for help. Here's a post that may help.

One thing to watch out for, when you pass a tool through the zing it (pencil to open it up, folded over wire to pull a bury, etc), make sure you are going between the "large" braided strands. If you split a strand and go between the small fibers the strands are made up of, you will have endless frustration.
