    Question Hammocking at Sea

    Greetings HFers,
Next month, I'm getting transfered (I'm active duty USCG), and it will be back to sea for me!
Aside from getting my sea-legs again I need to find a sturdy enough hammock and suspension that will endure the dynamic stresses caused by a vessel underway. This would entail a constant rocking motion, and/or regular loading and unloading of the suspension and hammock body fabric. My thoughts are to go with a 10oz canvas material with the body. Obviously, weight is not an issue, , but I'd like to keep it somewhat compact or contained when stowed.
    Any thoughts?

Scott at DIYgearsupply has a nice 2.8oz plain weave nylon that is very strong, but would compact well. I have made a double hammock with that as my top layer and 1.5 as a bottom for insulation purposes. You could email him and get his opinion as to what it could stand. There is always Cordura nylon too. I'd think that would be tough as nails and maybe not as bulky as the canvas. Just make sure the Cordura is breathable. I'm no fabric genius, but that's my $.02. Semper paratus!

A plain old ENO Double, GT Double or Kammok with retrofitted whoopies would be fine.

Just remember that you need about 12' apart between your supports & about chest height or more. Any of the three will pack down to a cantaloupe. (with the ENO and Kammok having better bag compression straps).

I assume you won't need anything with an integrated bug net, but that assumption may be wrong.

The Kammok is supposed to have a nice, soft feel against the skin and is also supposed to be very durable as well as very comfortable.

Hanging on the boat brings up some questions to me about the swing. Would it be better to leave the hammock how it is or would it be better to tie some shock cord to the edge of the hammock and then to the wall or another point help minimize the swing?
