Talked to Nest again today. He heard more shots before he finally got out of New Jersey. Don't think he ever wants to go there again. Take a look at his Trail Journal entry for the details of his experience.

He did leave a note in the shelter for the Trail Runners since it didn't seem like the police were too concerned.

    On to New York now.

Too many people don't know (or follow) the 2nd part of the gun safety motto:
    Know your target AND BEYOND.

As for knowing where a trail is: when off trail in the woods, you often don't know a trial is before you until you're standing in it. I'm an archer not a hiker, but I'd NEVER assume the other guy is ethical, safe or knowledgeable. Wearing an orange hat during any firearms season is a must.
The harder I work, the luckier I get.

It's easy to "not know where the trail is". Just ask anyone who has spent much time hiking & chances are there has been a time they left the trail to use the bath room & suddenly realized that the trail curved back around to were they were using the bathroom

Funniest one I ran into was when we camped just past a trail junction. I hiked up hill, away from the water source a good ways to find a suitable spot with my umbrella, trowel, and tp only to find that was where the other trail was and there was no going uphill past it. Yeah, it was raining.

Yeah, & some of those "hills" aren't much fun to climb up, especially when you discover that's not were you needed to be
