Still tinkering with the cut. But my newfound comfort may be due only to the bar. Hence the need to isolate the changes and do an apples to apples comparison of both the bar and the cut.
Not to worry. Full disclosure will be forthcoming when I figure it out!

OG,
I've been reviewing the entire thread again. I keep going back to the purpose of a spreader bar is to spread and hold the fabric. The closer the hammock rides against the spreader, the better it keeps the hammock open. So far I think most efforts are partially successful at this, at least on my attempts that is the case. Tried a couple of different variations using a 7.5-inch dowel, holes at 1-inch from ends, and my 12-inch amsteel loops. Can't keep the end channel tight against the dowel, has a short arc like other pics herein.
Since I'm using this on a TTTR Switchback, I've decided to run both the dowel and the loop thru the channel. This eliminates knots and other secondary loops to hold the spreader in place. I'm also thinking this should fix the "bunching" issue. Two questions remain: 1) will the fabric slip along the dowel; and 2) which is going to work best - loop thru the holes or thru end slots. Slots would make for quick detachment.
Pics and more details after I play with it tomorrow.

I *think* a short arc is desirable. I doubt that the fabric will slip along the dowel, but again, a bit of arc may be a good thing, so i'm not so sure about eliminating that. I prefer holes, because I believe in Murphy, and what can be lost, will.
I have had a lot of wine...compensate accordingly.

In my one test using NewHanger's method, the fabric stayed about as close as it could get to the bar (touching it) and it stayed spread out over 90% of the loop. My holes were spaced 5" apart and the two lines forming the other two sides of the triangle were also 5", forming an equilateral triangle. The bar did not ride up at all into the triangle.
I used a 6" long, 5/8" diameter hardwood dowel and dynaglide. The additional weight is 1.2 ounces. My 1.5 oz/sy, 11' foot hammock complete with suspension, before this mod, weighed 12.8 ounces. So this is a 10% increase in weight.
