I asked a hanging buddy of mine about this and he said that in fact, you want that 20-30degree twist, because that is what gives the hammock the greater comfort and larger "sweet spot". He took a piece of paper and twisted it slightly as the MSBs would twist the hammock and said "See, the diagonal is almost completely flat."

He suggested putting the RL at the upper end of the twist and compared it with a weight distribution hitch.

    Just saying....

Say, now there's a new twist to hanging a hammock!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist :embarrassed:

wouldn't you need to have full width spreader bars to make it like a piece of paper?

So my latest is a 10' x 5' with a 12" spreader at the head and a 24" spreader at the foot, and that is the most comfortable to me so far. I have not tried a 24 at the head yet.

To keep the fabric from sliding I run one length of amsteel through a piece of rubber tubing.

At the foot the side opposite of my feet, I bunch up the fabric towards that side on the spreader, and with the tilt it makes sort of a pocket for my feet. Very flat lay.

tammons, had tried slightly longer MSBs but due to the slipping had gone back to the shorter ones. Will need to look into the rubber tubing. Will probably give the 12"ers a try again on my fulltimer.

Silicone tubing works best but is heavy. I had an old piece of exercise equipment I scavenged the silicone tube off of a while back.

You could even probably go 36".

Vinyl Tubing also works but there is minor slippage.

If you gather the ends of a piece of paper and twist, you will get the same flat lay. If you use a plain gathered end, you don't get that twist. It comes with the spreader bar which is doing the twisting.

Is there a point of diminishing returns? What are you using for the longer spreader bar?

Tried a few things today and had some interesting results.
First I melted a small hole in the center of the end channel on the hammock and when the suspension was run thru the channel I larks headed the SRL to the suspension. I did this on both ends. Then I inserted the MSB and gave it a go, felt pretty good, good as anything I guess. Then just for S&G's I removed the MSB and just hung like that. I did adjust the suspension to account for the greater OAL w/o the bars but I did not adjust the SRL as that dimension had not changed. To my surprise I couldn't really tell a difference between having the bar in or out with the SRL connected to the center of the suspension?
So if anyone else is feeling a little froggy and doesn't mind melting a small hole in their channel I'd be keen to hear your results. I just made my wife a new tablecloth hammock and had I thought of this before I'd have put a button hole in the channel for the SRL but I'll prolly just melt a hole in it and not worry about it. I probably have 10 holes melted in my channel for other bad ideas I've tried and they have had no adverse affect on the hammock just in case you're wondering. I also tried the asym srl just by pushing the hammock and srl over to opposite corners when the bar was installed that actually seemed to make a better lay. It needs more testing but ATM for hiking I'd drop the MSB and splice a continuous loop into the end channel with SRL larks headed to the loop thru a hole in the center of the channel. Here are some pix to help with my explanation.

    Good luck,
