I did that once, got a little too aggressive with the amount of curve. When you do that, it makes the edges of the hammock soo tight you can barely get it.
    Good luck,

Okay, I finally found the time to try this out. I did 7" long, so 6" between the holes. The main reason being that the hammock is made from some heavier material.

I didn't have time to figure out what to use for stoppers above the PVC before having my wife try it out and see if she like it. It's much better by the way, less shoulder squeeze. However, if you don't have a stopping device in place the bar will find the position of least resistance which is at an angle.

I have two ideas for stopping devices. First, put a nice tight lash-it whipping. Second is to put knot bones on. Has anyone ever used them in an application like this? Do you think they'll hold up to that type of force?

This is what things look like at the moment.

I never tried a whipping b/c other knots I tried slipped on the amsteel so I didn't bother with the whipping, just figuring it would slip too. The knot bones sound like a good idea, I hadn't thought of something like that, they'd be worth a try.
Unfortunately I'm about to give up and just us a stopper knot in the line above the bar like in the original photos, but I'll choose a better looking knot. I think thats about the best I can hope for. As soon as I get some time, I have some bamboo I gonna try as the spreader bar and see how that holds up. I still think the bar has merit, I'm just still working on a better looking solution. Thanks for reporting back on your progress.
    Good luck,

Why not run the Lash It through the Amsteel to lock the whipping in position?

Nice work, Red. I've got a GT Double still in the bag that's gonna get the treatment.

Thanks OG. I might try running the whipping thru the amstee. Last week when I was brain storming I stuck a piece of zing-it thru the amsteel then just pulled it right back out. I'll look at that again and see what I can come up with... its certainly worth a try, thanks.

I think what might help is having a longer piece of amsteel from the the pvc to the rings

    Brilliant Red!

The idea of a mini spreader has been kicking around in my brain for a while now but haven't had the time to try it. Glad to see you have moved the concept forward.

The reason I've resisted making it longer was just to keep the hardware under the tarp. I could probably still go 6" longer a side and still keep in under the tarp tho, and that may help reduce the tendency to push the bar. Maybe??

Thanks a lot Knotty. There's gotta be a better way than PVC but its easy to work with. I'm hoping to get a more backpacker friendly version out soon. Wish I had some carbon tubes lying about, but I'm gonna go for the bamboo first and see if that holds up.... its a bit more organic

That's a lot of pressure trying to split that bamboo...may be better if the holes are adjacent to the joints?

How about a Ground Hawg stake???

Thats the problem with bamboo, it's light and strong, right up to the point of putting a hole in it, then you're in trouble. Maybe even one of these stakes would do the trick, they'd be light and strong.
