That stake (MSR snow stake) is strong but light. I use it for a potty trowel & back-up stake. It weighs just under an ounce! I think it would work!

Would the MSR stake have a tendancy to cut the amsteel?

Here's a possible way to get rid of the knots that I tried tonight. It worked long enough for a quick lay down and bounce around test.

Think of this as food for thought at this time.

I made the spreader bar out of wood (popular - 19 gr) with 5 inch hole spacing. A spliced a fixed eye on both ends of a piece of 7/64" amsteel. Then I buried 5" of a ~13" piece of amsteel centered in the middle and pulled it through so both ends stick out...now's a good time to look at the photos. The assembly is pulled through the hammock and the eyes are fed through the spreader. At this point the loose ends of the 13" piece of amsteel are wrapped over the spreader and buried in the longer piece of amsteel.

I'm hoping the photos explain it better than I have....

    That's what I'm talk'n about!!! Brilliant gmcttr!

I've been trying to come up with a way to splice an eye in it for the bar and I just couldn't get there, that is an awesome idea. Thanks for sharing.
    Good luck,

You might have to monitor the chafe, but I don't think it would be too bad, but gmcttr's idea is even better

Really slick idea, Red. And very elegant refinement, Gmcttr!

Maybe it's too early in the morning, but, Gmcttr, how do you get the two fixed eyes attached to the ring?

    GrayDog:
Those MSR snow stakes have very smooth bored holes. Somehow in the process of making the stakes, the inside edges of the holes are rounded off with no sharp edges. I think these stakes would be fine to use, especially since theres not much movement at that point.

Yeah, but how? This picture shows the spreader bar attached before the fixed eyes are through the ring...
