    Mesh size and ventilation

I was prompted by another thread, on permetherin, to search a bit on bug nets, especially treated ones. As I mention in that thread, I have an issue with limited ventilation, but not with the toughness and durability of bug-stopping of the mesh in Clark and Warbonnnet hammocks.

Here is a report on ventilation (and color, what I asked about) from the proprietor or this specialist company, dealing in safe travel. (It sells repellent and ---icide products, and water treatment, as well as treated bug netting.)

The netting this company sells has about 200 holes /sq in.

The treated single and double treated nets are in green. The treated Nimbus is in white and is designed for an 8 foot height (that can be extended with a cord) and is 41 feet in circumference which fits from cots to king size.

To my knowledge no one is making these large nets out of no-see-um since the mesh size on that material is 640 and tighter which makes it almost a solid material when you consider ventilation, which at 640 plus is almost none. As far as toughness it’s not like no-see-um which is what is used in our BugOut bugs suits but will stand up to it intended purpose.

I use a 200 mesh Fronkey net, treated with permethrin. The chemical does not soak into the mesh like it does fabric, leading me to suspect that more frequent re-treatment may be required. The next one I make will incorporate a small amount of nylon along the rl for that reason.

Ventilation with this net is perceptibly better than with other nets I've used, and so far, it has performed well on 'skeeters. I don't know if the permethrin will deter noseeums...if it doesn't, they will go right through that large mesh.

I've opined in other threads that careful cutting and replacement of "windows" in noseeum on some bug nets with permethrin-treated 200 hole mesh might greatly increase air-flow and comfort.

If an A-frame of noseeum is dense enough in my experience, to retain some warmth in the hammock otherwise lost from strong breezes, it makes it hotter in the summer, too. What with public health types concerned for insect-born diseases, there must be broad and deep empirical research on whether dense mesh size is required if netting is treated.
