Saturday- Blue Lake Trail day hike info:

    Round-Trip Length:
    5.1 miles
    Start-End Elevation:
    10,525' - 11,355' (11,371' max elevation)
    Elevation Change:
+830' net elevation gain (+905' total roundtrip elevation gain)

Blue Lake (11,355') is accessible from the Mitchell Lake Trailhead in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The lake fills a large, rocky cirque at the base of Mt Toll, Mt Audubon, and Pauite Peak. The short hike to Blue Lake is highlighted by a stop at Mitchell Lake, brilliant wildflowers, and a pristine alpine setting. Unmaintained routes continue past Blue Lake in open tundra to Upper Blue Lake and Mt Toll:

The Mitchell Lake trail rises gently in a high subalpine forest to Mitchell Creek and the official Indian Peaks Wilderness Area boundary (.45 miles : 10,646'). It moves easily to the first of several spurs for Mitchell Lake, which occupies a broad, marshy flat on Mt Audubon's south flank (.85 miles : 10,725').

In 1.1 miles the trail crosses Mitchell Lake's primary inlet on a long footbridge and steepens into the valley's center. Blue Lake's outlet pools up in several places along the way, forming large ponds that are worthy destinations in themselves. Look for moose along these richly appointed streams and ponds.

The trail undulates higher through patchy krummholz with a good look at Mt Toll's conical summit. It clears treeline beside a wide cascade and crests on the east shore of Blue Lake (2.55 miles : 11,355'). The open shore offers room to explore and a complete view of the upper valley including Little Pawnee Peak (12,466'), Mt Toll (12,979'), Paiute Peak (13,088'), and Mt Audubon (13,223').

Here the maintained trail ends, but a fairly intuitive route continues up the north shore to Upper Blue Lake, which lies in a glacier-fed depression at the base of Mt Toll and Paiute Peak (3.35 miles : 11,901'). Strenuous and potentially technical cross-country routes continue on to Little Pawnee Peak, Mt Toll, and Paiute Peak.

    O&B,
Nice summary and clarification. Just a reminder to all that we already have three campsites reserved at Kelly Dahl CG for Friday and Saturday July 6th & 7th that can accomodate 8 campers each, a total of 24 campers. TZQ

That is a great presentation O&B, thanks!

I have a feeling we won't have to worry about getting in a rain downpour this year like happened last year.

At this point, at least, it doesn't look like there is much hope of the fire ban being rescinded. What kind of stove are y'all planning on using and are you planning any kind of a back-up? Self-heating MRE's doesn't sound all that wonderful and I don't think they make self-heating coffee!!

    Decisions, decisions

At Kelly Dahl I will be using a Colman 2 burner(white gas) camp stove.
It will be setup on one of the picnic tables. Any one is welcome to use it.

For morning coffee, lunch while day hiking and evening coco I'll use an alky stove with caldera cone windscreen.

For the breakfast and dinner meals while car camping, I have one of those Coleman Dual Fuel 2 burner stoves I can bring.

For trail use and for making my morning coffee and such, I'll be using my Caldera Cone system. After seeing Food use his last year, I had to have one.

I will bring a Coleman two burner for Kelly Dahl also, maybe even two. That should give plenty of stove power for the campground. O&B, I see a Svea 123 in your "stove supply" picture. I have one of those too. I would really like to take it, but will probably opt for the Mini-Atomic with a plain tinfoil windscreen. TR42, do you know how much your Caldera Cone set-up weighs roughly?
