I'm looking for something to replace my wife's failing machine. It was inexpensive to start with and is waning in it's usable life.

I would probably pass on the first one. "Something kicking around in there" is not a good sounding statement to me.

IMO it depends on what she uses it for. Gear making would probably be fine for the second one assuming it works properly. Which could be a big if.

If she actually sews then I would get her the best new machine you can afford. If all she does is mend clothes and an occasional set of curtains... the second might be ok. But for more advanced sewing... don't scrimp.

I actually sent an email the 2nd one because I had the same thought... it will primarily be for my gear making, she doesn't do much sewing beyond the occasional alteration or clothes mending.

It appears to be a model 66. The paint is known as red eye. If your talking about the clinking noise you hear, being in the case, it is probably attachments. Singer sold a ton of model 66's and they are still in use today.
The light does not seem to be original, the case looks to be in real good condition

I thought of attachments but figured the seller would have enough sense to lift the machine and check it out. Maybe not. Something about the ad just don't sit right to me.

But Loneoak is correct, if it is a 66 and the rattle is attachments it would be well worth looking at. On the other hand, if the rattle is broken linkage it might be this one is destined to be displayed or junked.

Make sure he shows you how it sews, Parts can still be found but it may be beyond your knowledge to fix it and repair shops are not cheap. Manuals are always a plus if he has it.
