    Insulated hammock

I've been searching for some discussion about, or information on, a hammock with permanently built-in insulation below the hammock itself (as opposed to an add-on underquilt) and have found nothing. Am I a bad searcher or does the idea have such obvious (to others) drawbacks that nobody even considers the idea.?
It seems to me that the concept should offer significant potential for increased thermal efficiency, reduced weight, and lower overall cost. Am I missing the downside or the links?

I thought I saw some discussion of that on Jeff's site.

The problem about making and insulated hammock is stitching thru the hammock material itself at the head and the foot end. I have wanted to make one for quite some time and try it out, but you would have to use a very small needle (smaller holes) and good stitches. You would have to use a zig zag stitch to help with the nylon stretching. Overall it sounds like a good idea, if you can avoid catastophic hammock failure.

Thanks guys! I just knew there had to be something here; just couldn't find it. Up here in the North East there are nights but no seasons when you can confidently go without insulation.

QFT! Right now @ 6288' (Mt. Washington) it's 49 degrees. At 4000' it's only 10 degrees warmer. 61 degrees at the altitude I usually camp in.

I learned a trick on my bridge hammock, that a flat-felled seam can take the stress of body weight. On my bridges they go on the side of the hammock, here you would have them at the head and foot, and would be the terminating points for the built-in insulation.

I think actually that you don't need to have a proper flat-felled seam, but only a fold in the fabric that is equivalent to what you would have if you were joining two pieces. The ends of the insulation holder would be sewn into that fold.

I'm gonna try this on my next bridge project I think.

If you did what I can best describe as a double no-see-um baffle you would not have to sew through the body of the hammock any more than you would for a normal double layer. By a double no-see-um baffle I am refering to the use of no-see-um netting for the down baffles as normal, but then another layer of no-see-um would be applied as a cover where the second layer of fabric would be for a quilt. Then the whole shebang would be applied to the hammock body as the bottom of a two layer body. No seams into the hammock body itself. You would have to figure out the size of the bottom to account for the loft so it would not compress itself while you were in it.

The alternative would be using a continuous filmanet synth insulation and quilting it directly to the double layer fabric. once again, no seams into the body. Once again getting the sizes right so as to not compress would be a tricky part, at least for me.
