    The problem with DIY... Beware.....

Yes.. there is a very dangerous down side to the habit of DIY. I was expecting it to some degree but not to the extent that I was impacted. No I'm not talking about money, although that is a serious consideration before you get into contact with the DIY virus. It is in fact cheaper to buy Wally World $1 fabric and make it your self rather than buy the retail stuff full price. So to a degree the money can be rationalized. I am talking about something far more sinister and far more disruptive to household harmony and marital bliss.

I am talking to you specifically men as you are most likely to find this happening to you. It is that dreaded moment when you bend over to reach for something on the floor and the seam in your pants rips... Or the cuff that gets caught somewhere and pulls out. Or any of others minor every day inconveniences with you clothing or fabric of some sort. You take it in hand to your previously loving and doting wife only to hear.... "You can sew ... YOU can fix that." Ouch........
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

My kids have me sewing up holes in all of their frayed stuffed animals. I've fixed 2 recently, and there's still one I need to get to (Purple pony ).

I've also made costumes for school programs, and patched a favorite shirt that developed a hole. I'm looking forward to making a stadium blanket soon - nylon on one side, fleece on the other (for a Christmas present).

And of course sewing hammocks for everyone in the family, and underquilts, blackbishop sacks, and soon tarps too.

It definitely adds value to your investment in the machine.

I am ashamed to admit that I hem my wife's pants for her. She says I do a better job than the alterations shop she used to take them.

Or, if she's like my girlfriend, doubts you at every turn and is shocked and delighted when it turns out right!
