    Newbie needs Help deciding

So I want to get started hangin, but I don't know if I should MYOG or just buy a cheap setup to start. Wally word has a hammock for $25 and if I DIY a hammock I'm looking at upwards of $80 for supplies. What's everyone's opinions?

Amazon tends to have Grand Trunk ultralight hammocks for around $18. I would start there (if you're under 6') and then pick up a suspension package from one of our cottage vendors (whoopie slings, ridgeline and tree straps) and you're rocking!

I would suggest a Grand Truck or Eno. Both brands are good.

I was checking the one's in Wal*Mart out yesterday. They are made out of utility nylon which is ok but not as comfortable as other materials. I've also had one made out of utility nylon rip right out from under me.
My personal feeling is that they MAY be ok for a small kid hanging close to the ground and,or, someone who dosen't care much about comfort.
And, buying one from Wall*Mart won't help out the american worker too much. Just saying.

A Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro is $70 on Amazon, and looks pretty roomy due to the dual ridgeline for the netting. Add in some suspension and you have a hammock you can sit up in if you wanted to with built-in bug protection. Or you can get a separate bug net if you go with a hammock that has none.

Starting on the cheap may work, but starting with a good used rig off the classifeds here will make hanging a lot more enjoyable and easier. Worst case, quality used gear sells here very quickly. Problematically, you have be here and online when it comes up. I think the average time on a WBBB or Traveler is about 2-3 minutes. Papa Smurf's gear goes in nano seconds.

I'm just looking to get started, not anything super light or super lux. Just trying to get started. @snrmoment! That is what I have noticed about the classifieds here, but I will keep my eyes open.

Thanks for all the info guys. I really appreciate it.

if you are looking for a netted hammock i can't help, however if you want a simple no net hammock there are several in the 55-80$ range. ENO, grand trunk, warbonnet traveler, papa smurf's dream 60 among others.
