My poncho scrunches down to the size of a softball. I think yours is much smaller, based on the packaging I've seen. I wasn't sure the material was quite the same, and I didn't know if it had hems. I also thought maybe the emergency version was less breatheable, but that's probably wrong.

I've been thinking about making a PLUQ but now that I see this it seems like this might be a better choice because of all the different things you can do with it. Do you think this would be as warm as an UQ made from a poncho liner? I know this won't be as durable but to me that is a reasonable trade off. Also when uses this do you just pull the draw string on the hood as tight as you can?

As I understand it, the PLUQ is insulation, while the poncho is just another layer with limited insulating benefit, though I don't know how much. Without adding pads or quilt, I would assume the PLUQ is significantly warmer.There are some other threads out there on this subject, and the vendor who uses them may know how effective the poncho is.

I'm not sure I understand the difference between PLUQ and poncho. The emergency poncho definitely adds some insulation. More or less it just cuts the chill abit. In order to get a few more degrees I will incorporate some insultex that can be removed when unnecessary (like this summer).

The PLUQ is a UQ made from a military surplus poncho liner. And your poncho by itself is warm enough for you for summer anyway? Thats all I am really worried about at the moment as I am just starting to get into hanging and trying to gear up.

the standard Frog Toggs poncho weighs in at 8 ozs..I have one for the wife.

Correct. The poncho is a great wind-block, which will help, but not really keep you warm. It will, however, improve ANY insulation as it blocks the wind. This is ideal with a pad...

Like other's have said the Poncho LINER is a lightweight insulator. A PLUQ is good down to the mid-40's alone. I bet with the poncho on the outside, it would stretch it down a bit... (I am a cold sleeper, my PLUQ is good to 45 or so... great for So-Cal summers.)
