Just got back from Blood Mountain,Ga.
Temp was 12 degrees at 9:00 P.M and 12 degrees at 5 A.M
Kinda strange. Snow all over the place from 2 days earlier.
Slept warm an cozy. Here is a list of what I used. All clothing was slept in:
HH Hyperlight
Black Cat Tarp (Homemade MacCat version)
JRB Weathershield-bottom
SPE 2X2 with 1 3/8 inches of closed cell pads. 3 pads total.
(4) 1/2 inch wings
Fleece throw
balaclava
watch cap
gloves
wool sox
light weight poly thermal bottoms
heavy weight poly thermal bottoms
Nylon pants (Wal-Mart Athletic Works brand. Awesome pants for the $)
Smartwool zip shirt
Expedition weight poly thermal top
short sleeve polyester top
fleece jacket
frogg togg top
Would have used my Nest but it was being borrowed.

you're right, you don't need as much when you're using all that insulative clothing... but 12°f ???
i was a hair on the cool side by sun morn at rogers w/ my clothes & the ray way quilt. but for some reason i didn't put the JRB down sleeves back on the 2nd night. if i had i would have been fine<g>. i love my sleeves! ...tim

Try on a pair of oversized Sierra Design mutts over wool socks. I picked up a pair for <$25 & they compress pretty good.
I also found out that too tight socks &/or long underwear cause loss of circulation & cold feet.
