    What I didn't use

    Hey Hangurz!

So I was out hanging with Flatfishy this weekend and aside from copying all his set up as soon as I got home I came away with another idea I had whilst talking hammocks with him.

It was while we were packing up. I was listing the stuff I took that I didn't use and realised that it might be worth posting a new thread for everyone to list what remained untouched. I'd suggest just listing the kit and stating the duration of the trip. It might be a good place for newbies to learn from your experience. Personally, I reckon that if I list the same things more than once I will consider leaving them out in future.

The only thing that you should aim not to use is your first aid kit (so we don't need to list that).

So my list is as follows:

    Duration: One night

    What I didn't use:

    Knife
    Folding Saw
    Ground Sheet
    Honey Stove
    Teabags
    Spare baselayer
    Eye mask
    Toothbrush & Toothpaste
    Walking poles

That's rather a lot. You live and learn!

I always like to make a mental checklist of things i didn't use just so i can possibly cut the pack weight for next time. However, i don't think i would ever leave home without a knife!

I did that for a few years and dropped my pack weight down considerably. Good idea... keep up with it!

Yep, I agree. I had a gerber multitool I didnt use either. I suppose one or the other would suffice.

I use the smallest multi-tool with a knife blade and scissors I can find. I mostly use it for opening food packages. I might starve without it, there's a special place in hell for whoever designs those #@%# food packets.

My problem always becomes "what if I need it" I'm still working my way around this. I have things that I want, some things I'd like to test and play with, and then there are the things I need.

My last trip out the only thing I didn't use were my fire starters (Lighter and Firesteel) and my whistle.

Of course it had been raining for 24hrs and everything was completely soaked and I didn't feel like working too hard for a fire. But I'd never go out without those things.

Flatfishy seemed to have a good philosophy. He tries to not take anything that doesn't do at least 2 jobs. I also like the idea that every £ (or dollar, I guess) you spend on new gear needs to save you a gram (or ounce) from what it's replacing.
