    Ridgeline location on a BB

I was thinking of relocating the SRL on my BB from through the gathered end, and looping it over the strap suspension so it would be above the gathered end. Even thought of larks-heading it onto the Dyneema portion of the strap suspension.

I think it would give me more room when sitting in the hammock and when getting in a out.

Any disadvantages to doing this? Thanks folks.

Hi David, I would think the SRL is needed to support your bug net, also, if you just moved it outside of the net and the gathered ends, then I think it would be forced down tight to the outside of the cinched ends when the hammock is loaded, which would give no real advantage over the stock method.

You could extend the RL and fix it further up the straps or whoopies. It would need to be longer to maintain the 83% ish proportions. But this still wouldn't support your net.

I have added a continuous loop through one cinched end, shortened the original RL by the length of the loop and fixed both together with a Dutch biner. This maintains the original RL length and allows me to disconnect the RL when I'm just sitting in the hammock. I find it works really well. You could use a soft shackle instead of a biner if you like.

    Hope that helps.

It does help Mark, and makes sense. I would love to see some pics of your mod if you get a chance. Thanks a lot.

The ridgeline is needed keep the tension off the netting. Removing it or altering its
location, may overstress the netting and lead to failure. Netting is not structural, just something to consider.

Yeah I realized how flawed my thinking was once I read Roe Rings post.
I thank you for your response though, you are right.

    Hi David,

I had some spare amsteel and a burning desire to splice something, so I made mine from scratch. I started with a locked brummel at one end to form a fixed eye, then another locked brummel 12" down the line. This is the short length to the left of the picture. I then did the same to create a longer length which formed the main length of RL. I fixed the two together with one of Dutch's titanium biners. Any or all of the fixed eyes could be created using knots if you dont get on with splicing.

I started with a continuous loop instead of the short length with fixed eyes, but switched for no real reason, a loop would be just as good.

The hardest part was making sure the final RL length was identical to the stock BB RL length, the buries tend to shorten the overall length by approx 1" each.

I can see how this would be the most difficult part. Thanks for the pics. Great work!

nice.. i do the same... love being able to undo the ridgeline and lounge

cool thing is.. if you use a pillow and tether it to the ridgeline, this mod
prevents the pillow for migrating down towards your mid-section.

Thanks David and thanks Rip, that's a great tip for tethering your pillow.
