    Sub $30 Complete Suspension Challenge

Hey all, I'm a noob to hammock camping. I just ordered the DD Frontline and I've heard the suspension needs some work.

I'll get into modding and DIY later...after I have a hammock and know what I'm doing. For now, I have a 4 day kayaking trip coming up and I need an entire suspension system that has:

    1) No stretch
    2) Adjustable
    3) No knots (okay, maybe one.)
    4) Under $30 Shipped
    5) Must be able to hold 300lbs (I'm 230, but let's not cut things close.)
    6) Must not require DIY skills.

    Also, note that:
This system has no weight restriction (I'm kayaking, not backpacking). I figure that'll shave off a few $$.

I know there's an entire world out there of suspension systems, but the more I read, the less sure I am of any purchase. If someone could just make this easy and say, "Go to your local hardware store and buy X, Y, and Z", that'd really help. I'm also looking at Arrowhead Equipment, but I'm not sure what pieces I need to buy at what length (6' tree straps? 3'? What length whoopie slings? Carabiners?)

Anyways, I've seen how helpful you all can be, so I thought I'd just ask.

I bought the whoopie sling kit that Arrowhead Equipment sells. It's perfect for what you are asking.

    Exactly.

That has everything you need! I ordered the same kit a few months ago and it works great for me. I also weigh right around 230.

Or if you want something even simpler you could try the Cinch Buckle Kit, http://arrowheadequipment.webs.com/a...s/show/2575054 I have not personally tried cinch buckles because I'm trying to keep my pack weight as low as I can afford but I know a lot of people swear by them.

I'm not familiar with your hammock but assume there is some rope coming off the end? If so you could get some SMC decent rings from REI if you have one close, not all REI's stock them so call a head. Or you can order them from whoopieslings.com So, you're looking at ~$14 shipped.

You can get 1" poly straps with loops sown in both ends from Strapworks. Order twice the length you want for you tree strap, cut them in half and burn the ends. For a 20' strap you're looking at ~$17 shipped with this coupon code for 5% off NL050112M.

For piece of mind both of those are rated for 3000+ lbs.

Tie a pair of rings to each end of the hammock, put the straps through like a buckle and tie a slippery half hitch for safety. It'll look something like this.

For speed of setup, ease of adjustability, you can't beat rings and straps.

Pair of 1" 1100# poly straps 2.99 at harbor freight. Need to remove buckle.
4 rings descending rings at REI for $12, I havent seen the old style SMC rings in a while
2 of the cheapest, but RATED wire gate carabiners $13

For cost, just get 10 yards of webbing, cut in half and seal to the ends, tie to hammock and do the good ol four wrap knot at the tree. Gotta be WAY under 30$.

Of course it's not as fancy (or adjustable) as other systems, but it's one of the originals and it works.

of course, it's two knots- one to get it on the hammock and one (or so) to get it on the tree...

I also use the Harbor Freight 1" straps (12' long) for $4 and I use a Chainlink $9 a pair from Arrowhead Equip. along with Elephant trunks from Smart Outdoors $12 a pair. Wish I could download a pic. (Sorry) I love this setup, strong and fairly light weight. Total Cost about $25. Good luck to you.
