    Ripstop UQ question

I've gotten the DIY bug, I need an underquilt, more of three seasons wight. Thanks to all of the great threads on here I've gotten my plans and I'm ready to order materials. Here is where the question comes in... Do you have to use ripstop nylon or will regular nylon work? Also does it need to be silnylon?

If you are making it out of down then you will need calendered ripstop aka down proof ripstop. If you are making an uq out of other material then regular ripstop will work.

And, as to your other questions, if it's a synthetic quilt (non-down), you can use regular nylon, yes. However, you'll probably pay a weight penalty; 1.1 oz ripstop (and lighter materials, like M50 and 7d) are usually ripstop rather than non-.

You probably don't want to use sil. Sil is non-breathable and will cause condensation issues. One of the big advantages that an underquilt has over a pad is the lack of condensation since the water vapor put out by your body can pass through the quilt.

    Hope it helps!

Lubbock I had not even thought about the down coming through the fabric, but it makes sense. Thanks for the heads up.

FLRiderer, a mold filed quilt does not sounds like a good time. Thanks again.

DWR, downproof, ripstop nylon. It'll be more windproof than the alternative and wind can rob you blind when you least expect it.

Not a problem. It's unlikely that you'd wind up with mold inside of the quilt, though; more likely, you'd wind up with a damp back at certain temperatures and humidity levels from sleeping on condensation that had nowhere to go. Which is a good way to start the day off hypothermic when that cold air hits you as you get out of the hammock.
