splicing 7/64 vs 1/8 amsteeel?

i made my first set of whoopies out of 1/8 amsteel but i'm going to make a new set from 7/64.

is 7/64 an 8-strand or 12-strand braid? if 8, i'm wondering if the taper will differ for 7/64?

for 1/8 it's...mark 2...skip 2...mark 2...skip 2...mark 2

if 7/64 is 8 strand, would you only...mark 2...skip 2...mark 2?

7/64 is 8 strand. It's mark 2, skip 4, mark 2 as seen in this Sampson diagram, look at step 2.

[Technically speaking, the strand difference makes a difference....

In a "real" splice, the taper is an integral part of the splice. In a locked Brummell, the locked part the splice is weakened by the "locking" and the taper is much less important than with a true buried splice. A taper is still absolutely required.

For a locked Brummell, I typically, cut a couple strands about 1.5" from end (eyeballed) , then 1" from end, then 1/2 " from end. Then I fan out the bottom inch and cut it on an angle..

This is not the proper way, but a lockd Brummell, is not taking advantage of the full strength of the line, but for hammock usage, it is more than adequate.

In reality, you could skip the bury all together and have similar strength. I use this method to create pigtails for boats and other things. Sailors call it an "Aussie" splice. Obviously, it's not full strength.
