Tulle bugnet/Permetrhin and no-see-ums

I posted this question in another thread, but had no response, so I'm trying again...

I'm out of no-see-um netting, but making a bugnet for a friend in noseeum country. (aka biting midges)

I have some "camo tulle" that's polyester and very strong and light, and has smaller holes than standard tulle, similar to mosquito netting. From what I can see, noseeums will likely get through. I'm considering using this netting IF permethrin treating will be effective as the netting is far more breathable than the noseeum netting.

Input? Has anybody done this successfully?

I made a pair of headnets just this way for a trip to the swamp. The bugs weren't bad enough for me to ever try them out though. They just stayed in my pack.

So, great idea (great minds think alike) but I don't have any data to support their effectiveness.

Avoid the Tulle if at all possible. it's material make up is just not conducive to any type of abuse at all. I tried it, and thought I'd be able to be careful and not have it tear or rupture, but it was a mistake, I'll never make again. Save yourself time and money ...

I agree that regular tulle is fragile junk. this stuff is polyester, every bit as strong as noseeum net, doesn't distort like noseeum when stretched, and looks awesome (ok, a minor point)..

I think I might just add a camo ripstop panel to the foot end and use the noseeum I have anyway... I don't have enough time to order noseeum... either that, or I will go get some organza...

John, permethrin works on regular netting, but isn't absorbed, which makes me a little gun shy. Is the tulle absorbent, at all? I hope you try this...I've been curious about the efficacy of permethrin on noseeums, and whether it will dissuade them from entering larger mesh sizes.

I don't recommend tulle because of its stiffness and brittleness. However, I know some people use it very effectively and successfully. I've never had any luck with it.

Just to be clear: Most Tulle that I've found is nylon and fragile as heck. I could sneeze and tear MOST tulle. This stuff is Joann's "Fashion Tulle" which is a woven polyester and is quite resilient. It'll take a lot of abuse, and is VERY strong (it's even survived a run-in with some velcro.. .let's see normal tulle handle that!)

It stretches well on the bias, drapes well, and has finer mesh than "mosquito netting". I've used 2 flavors of camo tulle on hammocks with great success.

and no Mouse...I'm not going to experiment on DivaB's kid, Dakota... 13 year olds are only guinea pigs when I'm cooking at home... If it were MY kid? maybe...

That said, I'd be happy to make and PIF a HUG style bugnet for anybody who will put themselves in harm's way. I'll even douse it with some Sawyer's permethrin spray and pay shipping... shock cord and cordlocks are your responsiblity... Conditions of PIF: you are a known member here and pinky-promise to go out in noseeum infested conditions and send pics and a report!

Since I'm leaving town in a week or two and want to get this present out to Big D soon, I've decided to go buy some Organza, which will work just fine.

John....I think the tulle will be fine. Keep the organza for another future project. He's a typical boy...loves camo, I think we can make it work out just fine. It's mostly the mosquitoes and ticks I want to protect him from.....and those freaky, jumpy forest floor spiders Those certainly aren't going to fit through that mesh.
