Why not Quilted Hammocks???

I live in northern Minnesota & it seems that from all the input & my limited experience so far that unless its 75+ deg. at night (rare occurrence except for a few weeks a year up here), I will need an under-quilt or some sort of insulation.

So why don't anyone make a quilted bottom hammock? Rather than carrying another piece of gear?

My guess would be that, by laying directly on the quilting (insulation), you would compress it and create cold spots. By having a separate underquilt, you eliminate that.

Someone made a quilted Cuban hammock for the Minnesota frozen butt hang last winter, I believe. Maybe in one of Shug's videos, or Fronkie's, or??? 26 below freaken zero! Look in the trips section.

A differential cut solves the compression issue. Of greater concern is all of that stitching in the hammock body. I do like the idea, and WV, for one, has done it successfully.

What you're describing has been done. They're called 'insulated hammocks'. Basically, they're like an underquilt and the insulation is contained between an outer shell and the hammock fabric.

There have been quite a number of designs presented on the forum over the years, even some quite recently and from very cutting edge materials. None are commercially available though. At least not yet.

Generally, underquilts have been thought to be more versatile for matching the hammock and insulation combo to given temperature ranges. But also, many hammockers simply like the 'mix and match' approach to insulation and hammocks.

Insulated hammocks are certainly an interesting concept though. If the idea appeals to you, perhaps a DIY project is in order.

I like the versatility of using different temp rated TQ & UQ's for the different climates I tend to find myself in as I travel. I know it costs you more to have that ability,,but,,you also pack less weight at different times of the year. If all you have is one hammock..then you have that ability to maximize it 365 days of the year. Seems to me,,you would have to do that by having different temp rated quilted hammocks and its going to cost you as much if not more, to be as diversified as I wanted to be. Granted,,I now have 9 TQ's & UQ's and 3 hammocks me and the wife use between us, but we try to cover all bases in where we travel and camp.

I guess I don't know why compression would be a problem, just add a looser pocket layer below the main structural hammock. It could even have velco or zippered sides to open it or remove it when its warmer. By loose, I mean so it keeps its loft, not loose hanging below the hammock.

Just seems backwards, to buy a hammock & then have to attach a quilt under it & try to keep it in place under you. I like the concept that Clark has with building a system specific to the hammock... unfortunately the reviews on the z-liners are sketchy at best, so I will probably buy an under-quilt instead. But would be interested in a good hammock/quilt system.

Yea, one of Shug's friends on a hang had a beautiful quilted with down hammock. I was obsessed with it for quite some time. I had it marked in my subscribed to threads, but since the forum update, I have lost some of those links and postings. Sorry, I'm just not able to find right now. It was a thing of beauty though. If I come across that, I'll get that link for you, or perhaps Shug will chime in himself.
