    Heading to Pendleton, OR

I'm heading out to Pendleton, OR tomorrow for 3 weeks. I won't have any camping gear with me, but I was wondering if there are any hangers out there who would be interested in getting together for dinner and hammock talk.

I'm heading to the Tacoma/Olympia area in September for 3 weeks (Ft. Lewis area), so I will be up for meeting anyone on that side of the states next month.

This will be my first time in the Pacific Northwest, and I'm looking forward to it. Any suggestions for day hikes in those areas would be appreciated. I will have limited transportation, but may rent my own car in order to go off and hike.

I was out there a few weeks back...

    My must see's are these.

1- not really a hike but a fun day... Pike's Market Downtown Seattle.
2- Port Angeles and then to Hurricane Ridge. Great views and hikes.
3- Paridise- This is at Mt Rainier highest point you can drive to. Then take your picks of hikes. Take your time driving up and stop to explore alot of the stops. Just off the road is alot of neat stuff.

    Have fun

Go to the Ski resort at Mt.Baker, north of Seattle and east of Bellingham, then just past it to Austin Pass between Mt. Shuksan and Mt.Baker and day hike from there. If the weather is OK, guaranteed to blow your mind. Or, get directions at a ranger station on how to hike to the Coleman Glacier ( Heliotrope Ridge) on mt. Baker. Have fun!

I don't know Pendleton as well as I should, but if you do drive, the Columbia River Gorge has tons of waterfalls that are right off I-84, which I assume you'll be traveling on. There are trails that connect a lot of the falls.

I guess I should clarify that I will only have 1 weekend, and only limited transportation, while I'm out there. We are usually scheduled to work one of the weekends. My reason for being out there is for work, unfortunately.

I'll check out the suggestions and see what I can make work.

I went through Pendleton on my way to the Wallowa's 3 weeks ago. Its the middle of nowhere.

That said, 100 miles east of there is the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa's, arguably the best hiking/camping in all of Oregon. See attached photo taken from my hammock-hangin' camping spot. If you can make it over to the Lostine/Enterprise/Joseph area you will be happy you did.

Checkout the forums/wiki on hiking near Portland:

    http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Main_Page

I used this extensively during my 1-month stay in Oregon in July, and found it very useful and informative.

The Umatilla Wilderness is a lot closer to Pendleton than the Eagle Cap, but I haven't been there and can't vouch for it.
