Greetings all! My name's Pete. Long time lurker, first time posting. After scouring the forums, I finally took my first trip hanging. Thanks to all for advice and opinions.
I set out for the Sierra on Tues. morning. My goal was the Humbug trail to South Yuba trail and out the Missouri bar trail. These trails are on a mix of BLM, USFS and CA state park lands, near Nevada City, CA. I could find only one map that had all three trails. The journey wasn't long. 3 miles on the Humbug, another three on South Yuba and the final leg, a steep 1.4- 2.5 (depending on what you read) out to the road where I had to hike another 2.5 back to the car. I was intending on making it a two night stay. But, I hiked too fast and was too sore at 2pm Wed. to want to do anymore. So, I just headed home.
The Humbug trail was drop dead gorgeous the whole way down. It follows Humbug creek which was just waterfall after waterfall carving crags and pools through the granite.
At the end of the trail is a BLM campsite with a couple of picnic tables. It's situated on a cliff about 150 ft above the south fork of the Yuba River. Spectacular view of the canyon and river!
Set up my new Byer of Maine moskito traveller and Outdoor Products 9.5' x 8' tarp. The tarp came down, later. There was no need for it.
There was a small patch of sand on the shore, below camp. I took dips in the frigid water and cooked myself on the rocks. On my way back to camp, I nearly stepped on a freakin' coral snake. That experience made me sooooo glad to be hanging. The Hammock was crazy comfortable. With a thermarest and a down bag, I slept like a pup.
Great times!
