Some sap like poplar will wash off with water and/or a mild soap.

If it was a yellow poplar tree,,this is the worst year I have ever seen for sap,,I have had to power wash my deck now,,3 times,,and can't park car where I normally park it. I mowed grass this morning and ended up with sap all over me,,really sticky and sweet coming out of the blooms at the top of the tree. wash it with warm water will do the trick. Don't leave the sap on their very long or it will dry like glue and really be hard to get off. We haven't had a decient rain in over 2 weeks and even driving down the roads, the sap is covering them like sticky road tar. Very messy.
