    underquilt idea

not sure if this is in the right place, but here goes...

while thinking about making myself an underquilt I remembered that I had an old sleeping bag that I no longer use. I got it out and started to decide how I was going to cut it up to produce the underquilt I had an Idea. what if I could rig the sleeping bag, whole, under my hammock using the hood drawstring, and the two loops at the base (designed so you can hang it up to air) I tried it and it seemed that it would work. unfortunately I don't have anywhere where I can put my hammock up that will support my weight, so I couldn't test it properly, so I will endevour to test it properly as soon as possible.

has anyone else tried this? did it work, or is this idea doomed to faliure, and ridicule?

There have been quite a few people on HF that converted sleeping bags into UQ. I think it is a good way to get the feel of an UQ inexpensively. I think the ones that open all the way up to a rectangle are the easiest. Some people have also taken large sleeping bags and had them go around the hammock.

If you looks at TeeDee's Guide to making a bridge hammock, in the Article section, he gives instruction for converting a sleeping bag into a under quilt

all i've done is hang the (unmodified) sleeping bag under the hammock. the head end of the bag was attached by tying the drawstring through the loop of the zip, then doubling it back to the middle. the bag was under the hammock while the draw string went over the top. the remaining string (after the central knot) was then attached to one end of my structural ridgeline. at the foot end of the bag I simply put two loops of shockcord through the two loops at the end (for hanging the bag up to air) and then used a peice of cord that is attached to the ridgeline to tie onto both of these loops. this then forms an underquilt that keeps at least some of me warm, without needing any modifications to be made to the sleeping bag, so allowing it to be continued to be used for its origional purpose.
i'm going to test it out tonight, and will get some photos up tommorow if it works.

Sounds good. What are you using inside the hammock for warmth?

inside the hammock I have annother sleepingbag (3 season, 0-30 comfort range, -12 minimum)
Unfortuneately the Idea didn't work, the sleeping bag slid out from under me durin the night, so at about 4 o'clock I woke up with a freezing cold backside. looks like It's time to start sewing....

I think Iv'e worked out what went wrong. because of the way I had rigged the string at the head end of the sleeping bag it was able to roll out from under me. if I change the technique, and sew a small loop of paracord at the top of the zip (instead of the string running through the zip tag, possibly dammaging the zip), it should stay more or less in place, and so allow me to continue using the sleeping bag as a summer/indoor bag, as my other bag can get somewhat warm.

What's the total weight of your bags? I have an old sleeping bag that I have started to modify, but with the bag's weight plus my 20* on the inside of the hammock, the weight goes up dramatically.
