When your RL is too long?

If the only trees you can find are too close together for the length of your tarp's RL, what do you do? Start wrapping the tarp around the tree?

Too many variables. What type of tarp is it? Are you hanging below it or using it just for cover? Does it have tie outs along the top? Any side pull outs? A little more information would be helpful.

Could you double the edges back underneath itself to fit then find a smooth rock or something like that to bury in the doubled fabric and wrap some line around it to form the ridgeline tensioner lines like I have heard people do with Tyvek tarp tie outs? Might work in a pinch.

    Look for other trees!

With my current set-up, if the trees are too close together for the tarp's RL, then those trees would also be too close together to hang my hammock, at least for a 'moderately' comfortable (or, more accurately, uncomfortable) hang - I would continue to look for more suitably spaced trees (15' to 16' spacing seems to be my personal 'sweet spot' for very comfortable hangs)...

If those were the ONLY trees around, I'm not sure what I would do!
If the tarp was definitely required for weather protection, might have to go to ground that night...
More than likely I would just hike on looking for a better hang area with more suitable trees...
    Happy trails!!!

Funny you should mention that. On my todo list: additional loops 6" inboard of the existing loops, so I can "choke up" as necessary. Not ideal, but the price is right.

How much extra ridgeline are we talking about? several feet?
I'm usually lazy on my knots and use a figure 9 and let the extra dangle down.

I haven't had to yet, but my plan is to turn the tarp 90* and use the center tie outs to attach the ridge line. that would gain me 2 feet I have a 12' ridge, and 5' walls. One of the many reasons for center tie outs!!!!!

Q: What type of tarp is it? Are you hanging below it or using it just for cover? Does it have tie outs along the top? Any side pull outs?
A: Rectangle 8x9 set asym/diamond. Hanging below. No top or side tie outs, just edges.
Q: ...find a smooth rock or something like that to bury in the doubled fabric and wrap some line around it to form the ridgeline tensioner lines.
    A: Clever!
    Q: "choke up" as necessary
    A: Well put.
Q: How much extra ridgeline ?
A: Could be 3-8 inches each side; enough to throw everything off.
