Just weighed the 50 degree TQ that Underground Quilt made me a while ago,,sewn thru,,with 5 oz of 850 down,,DWR finish on outside,,and it came in at, 14.6 oz,,and like to burnt me up last nite in the house it was so hot and humid outside,,had to turn the fan on me, plus turn the air conditioning down to 67 for a decient sleep and still was hot cause of the humidity..yesterday it broke 95 and 81% humidity,,pure sweat outside.

I have been debating on a lightweight UQ and TQ for the summer months. I am very hot natured so I have been looking for ideas. One of the guys at the last Middle TN hang in Lewis Co, TN bought a second hand poncho liner for $15 (new was $20-$25) and is adapting it with shock cord along the sides then gathered at the ends. I think I am going to go this route. He used it that night and just tied it up and said he really liked it. I'll let you know more when I do mine.

I slept in one poncho liner for 8.5 months in Vietnam in monsoons, and about 40-45 degree wetness,,all the way to 90s and humid as heck in their summers, on the ground, with no pad of anything and poncho's take a beating,,that same poncho is now the dog's 41.5 yrs later, and still weighs 19.2 ozs,,the new ones weigh in at about 22 oz. Super durable!

I am going to have to look at getting a poncho liner. Thanks for the thread. I live in the south so hot humid is most of the year.

I just ordered an ACU poncho liner after reading through this thread. I'm thinking that I could even modify it with a layer of IX, then ripstop ACU on top. I've got some ideas for a footbox already

    Interim progress report

Well, I received the 3/4 and full IX single layers, and together, they weigh only 6 oz. So that's very promising for UQ and TQ - will have to add some bungees for suspension, and maybe an outside layer of some kind, but I'm thinking a less-than a pound combo is certainly possible.

Also got the two poncho liners I ordered. They are about 22 oz each, but are very big and with modifications may get closer to the weight I'm looking for. They seem like they would be warmer than the IX, but that remains to be tested.

I'm targeting a 6/23 weekend outing to test some of this out. Will report back. May get to do some backyard testing in the meantime.

May I suggest sewing one layer of nylon to only the exposed outside of the underquilt to save weight. Don't add nylon to the inside of it nor any to the top quilt. This will save weight and the nylon doesn't add a significant amount of warmth.

You do need the outside of the underquilt covered however, because the IX scrim will pick up every leaf and pine needle in a 10' radius around your hammock

Thanks for the suggestion. The lightest thing I have (without ordering some new material) to sew to the underside of my 3/4 IX layer as UQ is material from a Dri Ducks poncho. It is as light as any nylon, and supposedly WPB. Also cheap, and on hand. All good things.

I'm also planning on adding some velcro tabs or strips to the bottom ends of the full IX layer so that it can be configured as a foot box when used as a TQ and then opened up if I want to use it as an additional UQ layer.

TQ, UQ, and UnderCover made; guess what they weigh . .

Well, you can watch the video and find out. It ain't much. What remains to be seen is how warm this setup actually is. Have not yet fooled with the poncho liners; they are next. The video shows what I did with the IX single layers and a Dri Ducks poncho. Enjoy . . .
