So many choices..... I want a cold/wet weather tarp as a second choice. I seldom have to hike very far to get to a nice spot, so I am debating on the kelty Noah 12x12 or a oldman winter. Twice the price and half the weight. Not sure I really need to be concerned with the weight in my situation. The Noah seems pretty nice, so more pics and either talk me into, or out of it :-) thks.

I just got the Kelty Noah 12 and like it so far, although all I've done is a practice setup. But I did lots of research and decided it was the best for a reasonably low price with a lot of coverage. You can see soe pics of mine here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=53365

    Other options:
    - Those crinkly blue tarps (relatively heavy, but quite cheap)
    - Tyvek (relatively cheap, pretty light and durable from what I hear, some DIY work required)
    - Sportsman's Guide GuideGear tarps (pretty cheap, relatively light, build-quality isn't great but definitely usable with no problems): http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c...utm_medium=cse
    - These Kelty tent footprints (groundsheets) on clearance (pretty cheap, relatively light, but will probably need some extra tabs attached to be more useful, look up the tent to get an idea of the dimensions): http://www.kelty.com/c-sale.aspx as discussed here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=53990

I have a Chinook Tarp I got for $35 on Amazon, shipped free. It's massive. I like it a lot. Mine is 9 1/2 x 12, but I think there is a 14' version too. Your choices are Forest Green or Desert Tan, mine's Green. It's not silnylon, but it really acts like it, very very thin.

I am a bit of a minimalist and used to ground dwell, so from lots of experience, those blue lightweight polytarps from home depot go a long way. I have no complaints after years of use on the same one. I currently use a harbor freight camo polytarp in 10x12 and paid $6 for it. heres a bigger one

even though you are looking to get a tarp that is cheap and good with enough searching on this forum it would probably not hurt you to buy a good tarp(oes is my favorite) I once heard someone say that spending more money on something that is going to last is better then spending small amounts and buying the same thing every year.

Depends. What's a person's cashflow like? How much impact does unplanned downtime have? What's the risk of loss/damage? etc.

Mind you, I'm generally in the "buy the good stuff" camp, but it doesn't always make sense.

My other half and I each have our own tarps but we also have a Kelty Noah 12 that has been used most frequently. It fairly inexpensive and provides alot of coverage for the both of us. We are both quite happy with it.
