    Amsteel Stretch/Sag...

    Hi, Guys.

I'm looking to order up some Amsteel Blue (1/8") to make a Whoopie Sling. My only concern about using this material is potential sag. I'm 215 lbs. I currently use webbing and d-rings for suspension, and I have zero sag. I can deal with a range of 6"-1' of sag.

I'm in sierra desert, so sometimes hang sites are tough to locate. Sometimes I need to really reach between trees, so I'm concerned that a long reach will result in a great deal of sag with the Amsteel.

    Thanks, Guys!

Amsteel won't stretch so no worries. Just to clarify, sag refers to the shape of the hammock. The more "bent" it is the more sag the hammock has.

I'm weighing in at 215lbs and have used 7/64th Amsteel for a couple of years. THe Amsteel wont sag/stretch but the whoopies can slowly slip if not "milked" properly when your setting them, you'll know that it needs more milking if the whoopies make a "popping sound" once and a while when your in the hammock.

Lots of vendors here sell amsteel. I've bought mine from Arrowhead Equipment. but there are others that sell as well. Redden Marine is a non HF vendor that has in the past offered discounts to HF members. 7/64" amsteel is a popular size since it is strong enough for hammocks and is cheaper than 1/8" but some like the extra strength and piece of mind of 1/8"

No sag and no stretch here either and I'm not a light weight myself. You will be fine even with 7/64, just don't forget to milk it after you have it set.

Thanks, guys. I'm guessing that gy milking out are referring to making sure the spliced section is evenly smoothed out...

Again, your help and expert advice is greatly appreciated.

I've bought from Redden Marine and wesspur.comm but I usually by more than 100 ft. at a time. Though Redden Marine offers a 5% HF discount, I was unhappy with their shipping costs last time I ordered. They wanted $10 in shipping for a roll of Zing-It. Next time I'm trying Wesspur.com just to spread the love.

Why are you considering 1/8" Amsteel? Many folks do, but 7/64" works better with Dutch Whoopie Hooks (if you ever go that way).

Well, now I'm reconsidering the 1/8 for the 7/64. I thought the 12 vs 8 count would make a difference in terms of strength and sag. Also, I was going off of Slowbro's initial write up. I'm hearing consistent comments that it doesn't matter, though...thanks for the site references!

    When whoopies became the craze
1/8th inch was the norm. But of course the hammock folk had to flirt with the thinner line..its a obsessive compulsive disorder we all suffer from.

Someday, there will something smaller, better and lighter than 7/64ths.
I'm 300# and the 7/64ths works for me. And has for a lot of nights. I have it on my indoor set-up and it has seen +100 nights. No sign of wear and tear. It is suprising stuff!

For your big span issues..try a long length of line (say 8 or 10 feet) with eyes spliced on each end. You can add these to your suspension when needed. I carry a set in my kit, they work well.
