    Whoopie slings splicing

So I found this little gadget and was trying to get a splice going but no luck. Any tips for doing this? I can do splices w a needle easily but this thing has given me over an hour worth of frustration. Anyone else have any luck w these?

Yes, I've used those for making whoopies and continuous loops. Are you tapering before splicing? I've found it makes a world of difference.

I can't imagine what trouble you have with this loop turner. I think it's brilliant! Compress the cordage longitudinally enough to insert the end and push it through the hollow and out the exit, loosen the opening a little and grab your free end and pull it back through. You will have an easier time if you taper the standing end of the amsteel before you pull it through but I don't know how it could be easier.

What difficulty are you having exactly?

    Yes, what Les Rust said...

I have cut it down to two strands and it frays and expands when pulling back through. I even took floss and whipped them tight and still couldn't get it to pull back.

Sounds like too much taper, too fast, to me.

Are you closing the latch before pulling the cord through?

Have you opened up the Amsteel really well, before trying to use the loop turner? I have learned to do that. Plus, make darn sure you haven't snagged any loose strands, either when opening up the Amsteel first or with the loop turner later. It'll never, ever work if you snag a loose strand.

With 7/64ths, I've learned that a number 6 knitting needle is the perfect size for me to open the Amsteel up before running anything through it.

If the loop turner isn't holding the Amsteel, a tiny piece of blue painter's tape works wonders.

I made a quick (and poor quality) video to show how a loop turner is used to make a bury. Hope it helps. It should go something like this...

There...make your taper like gmcttr did. Just cut 50% of the strands away, and you should be good to go. Remember, this was just a demo...don't forget to lock your bury. Nice little vid, gmcttr.

Either way it doesn't matter, that's the way you do it. Just get a decent taper and fold it back on itself, then pull it back through. The sticky point is at the opening but once you weasel it into the bury, it pulls right through. You can enlarge the opening with a pen or pencil, or knitting needle if you need to.

Practice. I made a dozen whoopies last night using exactly this method and it's easy peasy once you get the hang of it.
