Right, I'm just wondering if there will be compression of down if the baffle chamber isn't high enough. I input the numbers, but the spreadsheet won't tell me anything about what to expect from the compression after putting all the tension on the quilt. I'm just going to go with 5'' inner and 5.75'' outer and hope that is enough of a differential to not cause the compression. Expect to see a thread of my build start soon.

The differential is between the width of the inner and outer fabric layers of the baffle. The height of the baffle vs loft of the baffle is a different parameter. That's my understanding and someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Right. That's true. I guess I'm doing a poor job asking my question.

Will the total baffle chamber height (not the baffle wall) change based on tension of being hung very tightly? So, should I increase the outer shell width between baffles to account for such compression?

    Hope that makes more sense.

I have tabs sewn to reach corner that the suspension ties to. In this way I believe I can pull it as tight as I want and only pull on the inner layer leaving the loft and outer layer unaffected. I don't know if that answers the question in a roundabout way.

Hey Mousekowitz, that's exactly what I was looking for. It made sense in my head, but it isn't uncommon for me to think something through and then put it to the real life test and experience something completely different. Much appreciated.

Maybe I'm missing something but are there instructions associated with the calculator? I've got Boston's updated calculator from 9/4/2014 so I know what materials I need, what cuts to make, etc....but haven't seen any instructions in any of the 10 pages of this forum (other than the instructions in the original post - which has baffles that are sewn width wise - not lengthwise - so clearly not in line with the calculator.... which lays out measurements for baffles that are sewn length wise).

The calculator just tells you the dimensions you will need for constructing a typical rectangular quilt, based on your input parameters. It can be used for more complex shapes, but you'll need to know what you're doing, and adjust appropriately.

There isn't really any definitive guide to making an under quilt. There are lots of variations, but they all kind of go together the same way. There's a bunch of threads out there of people detailing their builds. I highly suggest doing lot of research into how others have made their's, before attempting your own.

If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Just send me a PM.

BTW, if you want to do lateral baffles, the calculator works. Just enter your Width as the Length parameter, and the Length as the Width...

My version of the sheet assumes you will do a dual differential, where the end of the baffle will be sewn into the outer fabric to make a box shape.

Lots of tutorials/guides on the forum - this one was very useful to me (hosted on imgur, linked from here) and is based on the calculator:

Is there an ideal ratio between chamber width(IWB) and chamber height(Hc)?
In my head, thinner quilts would have narrower chambers and v/v, am I thinking straight?
(or is my head a bad place to keep quilts? )

Warmth is a function of loft (height). Width just insures enough down stays in place to maintain the required loft. Less is probably more....
