    Scout Training

Taking the Baloo and OLS OWLS courses this weekend. Of course I will be in the hammock. However for OLS/OWLS they want to see you put up and use a tent. You have to basically do what you have your scouts do for the first few ranks. I asked if my hammock "tent" would count and they said that yes it would be good for the other scout masters and what not to see a different set up. Here is hope for a few conversions.

Good luck with that Baloo/OLS OWLS training. I'll most likely be taking that course here in AZ in the fall. I'll have to do the same thing and see if I can get a few converts myself. I'm a very recent convert and an Eagle Scout, so I'm eager to spread the hammock word.

I am BALOO trained but doing my OLS next week and never thought to bring the WBBB. No converts yet but many questions. I am also the hiking coordinator and take the boys hiking once a month so many of them look to me for guidance on the outdoors since we are in the Chicago Suburbs where most parents think camping is staying at their lake house vs home.

On our last camp out we had only one tent. And he is now getting a hammock. We are at about 75% hammocks in our troop now.
Spread the good word my brothers.....

I am on the Boy Scout level. I have used my HH for five plus years now, and have told the boys they can do hammocks, if they want to. Last camp out, I brought a cheap nylon hammock, set it up thinking that the boys would like to lounge on it during the day, and found them mildly arguing over who would get to sleep in it for the night. I had to let one kid use it one night, and the other use it the next. A third kid looked disappointed that he did not get to.

I have printed out the article on the Boy Scout hammock kit, found on the Dream Hammock website, and passed it out to these scouts. These describe making cheap hammocks and gear. I may also give them some printouts of Ebay auctions for like cheap Grand Trunk or ENO hammocks.

So we may be taking fewer tents along on our camping trips from now on.

We use both tents and hammocks with in our troop. On our AT Hike one of my scouts wanted to know if I would be letting the scouts use my setup. I may start carrying a spare setup just for that purpose on future outings. Have fun with the training.

It's great seeing how many troops have actually converted over to hammocks and how some of those boys are even sleeping in hammocks full time at home also.

Awesome... whip out a couple knots for them to show scout skills.... prussics for tarp, marlin spike for suspension, etc.
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

Plan on the knots. Really liking the taut line hitch for the tarp stakes.
