    Knots?

    Hey all,

New to the world of hangin' and was just wondering if I could get some help from all the pros here. Could anyone provide me with a list of the knots I should know/learn for hanging my hammock and accessories? All my knot skills are with fishing line, not hammocks, and I could use some guidance. Thanks!

FYI, I am using a eno DN and whoopie slings for my setup.

Check out this great "How to" video series. Part 3 & 4 also talks hammock suspension and knots. Welcome to HF!

    Hi Japes4,
    New here too, first post!
If you haven't already seen it, animatedknots.com is a neat site. not a ton of knots covered, but those that are are done well, and would be appropriate for 99% of all situations you might encounter I think.
    Good Luck!

    My list:
Sheet bend or preferred is the slipped sheet bend
    Siberian hitch
    Bowline
    Taut line
    Pile hitch
    Clove hitch
    Trucker's hitch
    Alpine Butterfly
Prusik or I prefer the Klemheist
    Marlin spike knot
Figure 8 line coiling on your hand, for tarp lines, etc.

Not specific to hammock camping but many of these knots are nicely illustrated on SwissGearLabs Youtube channel by using larger line vs 2mm line or similar sized line that will normally be used for tarp setup.

Lately I've become fond of using the pile hitch for connecting my line to tent pegs or stakes vs using a clove hitch or bowline. I do things a little different from most in that I connect my line to the peg and have a taut line knot or similar adjustable knot at the edge of the trap and not at the peg end. That way the adjustable knot it up high and if it is raining and the tarp has become loose I can usually reach the knot from under the trap to re-tighten the tarp lines and not get wet.

Pile hitch at the tent peg:

I've not used this knot yet. But I am intrigued by it. The non-inverting slippery bowline hammock suspension knot - for tying your tree straps to the tree and not use a carabiner, dutch clip or other hardware.

These knots and the knots in Shug's videos and you should be good to go.

My "go to" list . . In order of importance.. but not necessarily of Hammock importance:

    Bowline
    Half Hitch
    Trucker's Hitch

The above 3 get you 90% of what you'll need in life...

Then you can add some cool/useful knots:
    larkshead
    Clove Hitch
    Triple Overhand
    Prussic or Klemheist
    Taut Line Hitch
    Timber Hitch (really simple)
    overhand loop
    figure 8 loop

Animated knots is the best site around!
