Making my daughter a hammock ?'s

My daughters 13 but the size of a 10yr old. I have the material and I am ready to start sewing but what size should I go with (cut it). Am making just a gathered end hammock with 1.1 ripstop nylon.

Also if I wanted to mount it in her room to lounge in without a stand can I run an eye bolt into a stud? Would it hold her? thanks

I've seen some big 10 yo's.. Common rule of thumb is height plus 4-5' depending on who you talk to, (I go for the longer ones). Asuming she's still growing I'd go longer than that.

Eye bolt into studs? I've seen some big 10 yo's... That's hotly debated depending on your house, knowledge of carpentry, etc. I hang in one every day that's eyebolted into studs and I weigh 180#.

Search around for other opinions but if you know what you're doing I say go for it. (and maybe put a bunch of pillows under her. kids can stress hammocks.)

My daughter is six, and I made her a standard sized hammock, they grow so quickly that I figured it made no sense to make a hammock to accomodate her current size. She's in and out of it with no problems at all.
As for the inside hammock hanging, you should be fine as long as you purchase a good sized bolt, and if you have a stud finder, use it to find the exact center of the stud where all of the strength is located. Predrill a hole the thickness of the shaft of the bolt (where the solid metal is minus the threads) this will allow the bolt to go into the stud more easily with out splitting the stud.

Thanks for the responses, I did forget to mention that I am pretty mechanically inclined. I do have a stud finder and I know to predrill holes LOL
My kids are usually the smallest ones in their classes, always have been. So they def aint normal 10yr old size. Once I get this done I'll see about hanging it. THanks again

Granddaugter is 3 and she's in and out of mine all the time. The eyebolt will hold in the stud, but will the stud hold into the wall is the question. You need to be sure of it's attachment to the header and footer. Mine are into studs that are at the window and doors so they're into doubled studs and those are attached firmly. I weigh 285 and have, third time for this today, added my grand-daughter, dog and a cat and it all holds.

That's where I have mine too. One window and one doorway. Full stud up high so the stud doesn't flex and start popping plaster.

Well got it done but the sides are all floppy I used these instructions here http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=15205

Should I use the fan method of putting the ends together? Of course cant find the thread that had a detailed instruction on how to do that.

I find the Knotty method to be really comfortable. The flop can have to do with sag and how you are laying, i.e., get a good diagonal and there is less floppiness. Of course it also depends on the width of the fabric. Mine is usually about 56".

    You can try different methods.
