To get in a hammock, I always grab the edge with one hand and spread out the material behind me with the other as I sit down.
I was puzzled one time as I was sitting down because the edge didn't look right. Turns out I had grabbed both sides by mistake. A quick roll backwards and I was on the ground, in the bugnet with my legs still over the hammock. I check for that now.
I did the same thing sans the bug net. No one saw me do it, but my wife saw me getting up off my back and laughing at myself. I was in the back yard, so exposure was minimal!Originally Posted by gmcttr

Your and Cannibal's story paint hilarious pictures (at least until I picture myself in that situation). But they also raise (in my mind at least) some pretty serious questions. The main one being "How does a person extract oneself from that situation?" The part of me that jumps the last two feet into bed after I turn off the lights so that the girl from The Ring doesn't grab my ankles, is kind of freaked out by the possibility it happening to me--ever.

Well, in short, I flipped around inside the hammock and reached out through the entry slit and grabbed the webbing suspension. This was back in them old days when rings and buckles were still coming on the scene. My suspension was simply a long length of webbing on each end that was lashed to the trees. I just started pulling myself while keeping as much weight as possible off my feet and knees. Once I got myself about half way removed from the entry slit, I just rolled and fell to the ground. It was very awkward and would have been very embarrassing had there been any witnesses.
Trust nobody!
Stretchy suspension was my first fail.
Second fail, I hung the hammock higher to compensate for said stretch..the original equipment s-hook broke and smucked me in the noggin' at mach 7. That hurt!
Third fail was at the last Hoosier Hang. My strap broke in the middle of the night. The strap was showing wear, but I pushed it to the max. Should have changed up?! Live and learn.
Seem to recall 4 times, all operator errors not hammock failures. One missing the hammock and sitting in the undercover, always use both hands to spread the hammock now. 3 or so with slipping mule tape knots, finally figured out how to tie that stuff.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Ever since then I have been somewhat wary of objects with mass connected to cables that are under tension--it's as if they aspire to becoming projectiles ("When I grow up I wanna be a bullet!"). I avoid hardware in my suspension even though I know thousands of people the world over use it safely--my personal neurosis

But seriously, sounds like you are doing it right--I hope you continue to keep it all sky-borne. While the stories are often very funny, I have heard of a few that didn't turn out that way.
