Anybody know if this stuff will make a good hammock?

Doesn't matter what I try, I always wake up around 1:AM with the cold butt syndrome. Pads, quilts, whatever. They always seem to get balled up like a pile of tires. Under quilts are nice but bulky. Same with top quilts.
What say Yee? Has anyone tried this or shall I be the guinea pig?

Used as a hammock the insulation will be compressed because the shells are not differential cut for a hammock shape. Even it the loft remained, it is about the same as a poncho liner, limiting it to warmer temps. It will have more bulk then down for the same rating.

If you like pads ("quilts are too bulky"), have you tried using one between the layers of a double layer hammock?

+1 double layer. If you happen to buy a big screen TV. they are wraped in a wonderful closed cell foam, very thin. Best Buy will give you the stuff if you ask.

I don't think I'd trust it to make an actual hammock of that is what I am understanding from the thread title. I would be afraid the strength would be compromised by the quilting stitch. Even lighter hangers can exert a lot of force while hanging by just pushing down on your heels as you get your rear adjusted where you want it or something like that. I am a double layer fan myself as well. You have much more flexibility in your insulation choices and could go with none if it is a warm night. Making an actual hammock out of this would be somewhat limiting I would think. IMHO

Looks like it would make a fairly nice Summer top quilt, especially for up North. Might also make an underquilt for Spring, Fall, and higher elevations in the summer.

I want it to. I wrestle with my pad (I'm convinced the physical exertion that I put into trying to get comfortable with my pad is where the true warmth value comes from), and an UQ is not a likely event in my forseeable future.

However, it seems like if you used this to make a hammock you will wind up compressing the quilting as soon as you get in it, thus limiting how effective it will be as an insulator. At almost $15 a yard that could be a pricey experiment (my hammock required 4 yards). Also, if bulk is a concern, the hammock could turn out to be too bulky for your liking.

I'm not an engineer (I don't even play one on t.v.), but those would be my two main concerns about using this as a hammock.

I got so that I just sleep with a goose down coat and some wool insulated pants on. I sleep ok but it just doesn't feel right.
Soon as I saw this stuff I pictured myself laying in it like a baby carriage.
Me thinks I will make a double layer with this stuff stitched in between and hire a full time Sherpa to haul it around for me. Anyone know where I can get a Sherpa for, oh say, $10.00 a week?

Take a look at the idea I came up with for a detachable double layer under the title Hammock Magnetism. Gives you a lot of flexibility. I had a nice warm hiney all night and the insulation stayed put with no compression of loft. I have a poncho liner coming that I will try out to see if it stays in place.

That looks like it would cost around75 and that's if you don't do a diagonal cut to increase width. You will still get CBS because you will compress the lower areas.

I've got 6 1/2 little Sherpas (Sherpa #7 due some time in September) running around. You can borrow a couple if you like (warning: when you are prepared to set up or break camp they will be nowhere to be found, and they will ask if you are "there yet" on a secondly basis (they take turns so that no one child's voice goes hoarse) once the trip is under way.
