    Taut tarp setup

I have a cuben tarp with doors from hammock gear, and I'm having trouble keeping it from flapping I the wind. Any good how to's, videos or general suggestions to help quickly pitch a taut tarp? I'm specifically interested in the best angle/length the lines should be at with respect to the tarp. Also, do you guys have problems with your hammock suspension hitting your tarp ridge line at all?

I always pull inline with the corners. Doesn't matter how long your tyeouts are, that's your preference.

if you tie your tarp suspension around the tree in a V, your hammock suspension can go through.

I'm looking for the original dejoha illustration, but here's another of is about tarp rigging

This method looks like a lot of work, and but once you set it up the first time you only need to set one stake per corner and then tighten the other lines that run to it. It definitely keeps your sides from flapping. I've used it and it works. Its just an Alpine butterfly loop on the corner guy, and taut line hitch going to that loop from the other guy out points.
    Good luck,

I like the illustration with the two half hitches and the taut-line.

I would like to add that the taut-line is often mis-used because of an error in some of the first scouting materials that taught it.

The taut-line is best used as an actual hitch to a pole or spike, where as the midshipman is better for tying the line to itself for adjustments.

I'll try to post some pics later, but the knots are almost identical accept for a how you wrap the second turn.

It's not really a big deal, but the taut-line gets some flack for instability when actually it is often not implemented in the best way.

I use Tarp Flyz on Zing-it from The Dutchmaster http://www.outdoortrailgear.com/featured/dutch-flyz/ for my ridgeline. Make sure the ridgeline is tight.

For my tie-outs on the corners I have Kelty Triptease on all four corners. I used a bowline knot on the end that goes around the V-stake. On the other end, I have tied taught line hitches. My lines are 8’ long.

I draw a mental line along the bottom of the tarp and from the corner up to the ridgeline, intersect it with another line that will point in the area of the pull outs or just to the inside of the pull outs. I set the stake on that line. Once all are staked, I run around and tighten up all the lines. When the weather is nice, I go to porch mode. If I want protection, I put a marline spike hitch in the line and stake it close to the hammock and deploy the pull outs. I am thinking of going to a prusik knot instead of the taught line hitches. I would seem to be easier to pull the line short and avoid the marline.

I never have been able to get a drum tight pitch, but my tarp is not flapping in the breeze either.

The HG tarp is not a small thing and will catch a lot of wind where a diamond tarp with large cat cuts will not. It will also be a lot easier to get a tight pitch.

I am still working on what to do with the doors, so I can’t help there.
