    My Students Think I‘m a Super-Genius

For their final projects my students are presenting an act from Romeo and Juliet. Most opt to film it, but one group wanted to perform their act live for the class. One of my students brought me some sheets and asked if we could rig up some curtains as a waiting/preparation area for those students who are not playing in the current scene.

I instantly thought of all the hammock/tarp things I’ve learned here, and by the end of the period I rigged it all up:

    One quick paracord ridgeline.

Four braided mason’s line continuous loops and four eraser “acorns” to suspend the sheets:

Prussic the continuous loops to the ridgeline, and larkshead each around a sheet end and eraser:

And Voila! 50 minutes later it's curtains for period 6:

One of my students said "Wow! And without any duck tape." Cordage may not solve all of lives ills, but it certainly lessens them .

Really nice job of putting what you learned to use. Looks nice and thats pretty good making up loops that quick! You should post some pics or vid of their production and I want to thank you for being a teacher!

Suuuuuure...you just "happened" to have all of your cordage and splicing tools on hand. Seriously though, this is such a great place to learn. I too want to thank you for being a teacher...I'll bet your classes are super fun!

"No duct tape!" that is quite remarkable.

I would have liked to have had teachers like you when I was in school. The only tool they carried was a wooden ruler - WHACK!

Let me add my thanks for teaching!

Thank you, but truth be told, it's too much fun to really be considered a job. Keep it on the down-low, though .

Last two weeks of school, all my students self-guided and working on projects, boredom setting in, and it occurred to me: I have a satchel at home with all my cordage and project-y things stuffed and tangled inside. It's pretty obvious what had to be done... grab that satchel on the way out the door and bring it to class with me. Sadly, two periods later it was organized about as well as I was going to get it, but as you mentioned, I just "happened" to have some things with me to play around with (spent the rest of the day making paracord soft shackles ).

I remember my principle had what looked like a canoe paddle hanging from his wall (holes drilled in it and everything). I also remember my mom telling him that he didn't need to call home for permission to use it if the need ever arose--"just swing away." I don't think I could, personally, get myself to paddle a student, but you can't argue with results... growing up I was not what you would call an angel--but I was one at school.

Can you believe it? The one thing I did not have in that satchel was duck tape .

Good job T! I love to see good improvisation! You could tell them you are the next MacGyver... if they only knew who that was!

Something every teacher should have is a cordage stash. Well done Tim!

Surprisingly enough, I have heard a couple of students refer to MacGyver this year, so they probably understand enough to know that I am no MacGyver (with no duck tape, how could I be? )

I shouldn't reveal any trade secrets, but cordage can be invaluable when dealing with unruly students: http://www.animatedknots.com/handcuf...matedknots.com

Just remember, you didn't hear it from me .

IIRC, I learned this one as an 'Alpine Butterfly'. Great knot for climbing harnesses too...
