    Hello From Ontario

Returning to camping after a many year hiatus due to promising my brother-in-law to do some rough camping.

I've never used a hammock but am hearing good things and will most likely be giving it a whirl to keep my fat-*** elivated over the lesser beings.

On that note, can anyone point me in the direction of figuring out when a pad or UnderQuilt would be necessary temperature/wind range wise. I'm a big heavy guy that carries my insulation all year round and need to figure if I'll need this for some camping this September.

Thanks and thanks for such an informative site!

Welcome from the west coast of Canada!

Welcome from Victoria on Vancouver Island,

I just started hanging in my WBBB and already have experienced CBS (cold butt syndrome) My next purchase will be un UQ ...probably down.

For me, and others, "local testing" has been a safe way to gather experience for the purchase of the right equipment. Basically you start hanging in a place that will allow you a safe exit if you're not warm enough or comfortable enough.

Hello and welcome! I lived in Pickering and Ajax for years and my family is still there. There are many Ontario hangers here that get together every so often. With regards to insulation many find they need it below 20 degrees C. There is convective heat loss and your back can get cool even in warmer temps.

howdy from northern Ontario! I'm quite happy with my Jarbridge River 3 season UQ from Arrowhead Equipment. Have used it into late September up here, never had a problem.

    Welcome!

Best thing to do is test what you're tolerance is. Bring a UQ, you can probably borrow one for a night or 2, and set it up but leave it hanging beside the hammock. Then if/when you get cold you can simply move the UQ under the hammock. Cheap enough to get a pad and try that out too.

I'm a recent convert myself and although I have Warbonnet's Blackbird 1.1 double (bought in case I wanted to use a pad between the layers), I just love my 20 degree UQ and have yet to try a pad. I am about to pull the trigger on a 40 degree 3/4 UQ for the warmer weather, it's about half the size & weight packed, so this should open up a bit of room in my backpack. From what I've read pads can be finicky as they move around some.

My experience has varied. Hung in Florida this March with temps in the high teens and although I had my UQ out the first night, I didn't need it the rest of the week. Although the general consensus is anything south of about 20c or 70F.

Funny I hoped I was done after getting all set up with a 20 degree UQ & TQ and the Blackbird. Seems the tinkering (and spending never stops) once you start. Just a heads up, this stuff is addictive!

Oh and although not mandatory (maybe should be part of joining here), you should definitely watch Shugs videos.
