I did my first hang last Thursday, setting up in a stand of trees at one end of a rest area, at night. The mat I used, an old Thermarest sorta-CCF was of mixed value. It definitely did the trick insulating me from the chill, but the shape and stiffness were problematic. I used it again two nights later down in the San Bernadino mountains.
I'm mixed on hanging at the momentj, leaning towards the positive. I wasn't cold, which is great, because I'm susceptible to ground cold. I tend to be a sprawler, so the relative constriction of a hammock, compared to a bed, is iffy. Compared to a sleeping bag, it's an improvement.
I had some difficulty getting comfortable, undoubtedly I'll need to fiddle with things to get the "perfect hang."
I'd like to give a ginourmous to Derek for taking the time just before Memorial Day to give me a mini-seminar on hammocks, suspensions, hwo to hang 'em, etc. I learned a bunch.
