If you're referring to pulling the center out through the whipping (effectively shortening it) give it a try as a learning experience. It will quickly show you how it all works.

However, as I recall, I tried that thinking it would effectively lengthen the sides allowing a flatter lay. It does "sort of", except the sides want to swing in to the center leaving you laying on a rope.

    It's all good experience though.

Yeah, I think some testing will be requiered.
I'm quickly learning that the 156' by 90' hammock is a beast

Not necessarily a bad thing though.

Back when I was experimenting with my hammock, if you pull then center portion out, the center of the hammock lays bit tighter and not right or comfortable.

I'm not sure what the width is that your working with, but mine was 90" and the fan fold in an accordion style fold. I started from one side working my way to the middle almost 2" inches each fold, then went to the other side folding till each side met (made holding the material easier). Then I went through each fold making sure they were equally lined up and seeing that non didn't slip down. It's really not hard at all. I also found that starting with the outside fold going towards the ground worked better than folding it up towards where you lay.

Just practice different techniques till you find one that works for you and your body type. Don't make it harder than what it really is. By lashing it and not sewing, your options are endless on the techniques you can try out.
