    Suitable for Tarps?

    Hi all,

as a newbie to hammocking with some sewing skills, I want to make my own basic tarp. I'm just having some issues getting up to speed on what is suitable. I have my eye on these two, just want to make sure that they might be what i'm looking for.

One is listed as Lightweight Nysil (like Pertex4)
    http://www.fabrics-n-stuff.co.uk/pro...jpin6kueaactc3

The other is listed as Pertex 5
    http://www.fabrics-n-stuff.co.uk/pro...jpin6kueaactc3

Both are 'Water Resistant', but i'm not sure what that means in the real world.

    Any help is appreciated.

"Water resistant" means it will not soak through and leak _immediately_. But you can bet your bippy you will get wet in a good rain. It will just take longer than it would with untreated fabric. For a tarp you want _waterproof_.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I see. Most tarps seem to be Silnylon which I assumed was the same thing as Nysil. I'll keep on looking. Thanks for the info.

    Cheers,

I'm guessing Nysil is a take off of nylon-silk.

The quick poking around that I did they compare Nysil to Pertex which appears to be a Gore-tex type material. Water-resistant and breathable. Seems like it would be good for an under quilt, but I don't think I would make a tarp out of it.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I may store some away for when my sewing skills might stretch to making my own UQ.

    cheers all.
