2 Month Trip - Southern coast of Spain

    Hey Hammockers,

First post here. Great community. I was wondering - does anybody have experience hammock camping the southern coast of spain? Taking a bike tour down there in August and I'd love to use my hammock as my method of sleeping - but don't wanna get caught off guard if there are no trees around. I'll be following the coast from Gibraltar to Barcelona. If you've got any experience in this area let me know!

    Thanks!

Pff been a while since I was last there (1998) but most of coastal Spain is pretty touristy, probably hard to find a spot with a bit of privacy. The further you go away from the coast, the less tourists (and hotels and...) you'll see.

Not sure about legalities. The Guardia Civil (police) hits first, ask questions later (or so they did in 'them days' of sleeping on the beach...).

They do/did have quite a few campsites, mostly geared towards ground dwellers but hammocking might be an option (only started hanging in 1999), so hope somebody else can be of more help.

Have fun, looking forward to pics and stuff.

    Grtz Johan

I was there just last year and did a lot of hiking in the lush green Cantabrian Mountains of Asturias near the northern Atlantic coast. The was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen and the people are lovely.

We also traveled the Mediteranean Coast from Alicante to Barcelona but rented rooms. That coast, like most of Spain, is arid and there are plently of places without very many trees. Water is also scarce.

Contact the tourist bureau and tell them what you want to do.
Spain is a wonderful country. There are beautiful beaches along the Mediteranean. I have lived on the beaches of Florida all my life and since seeing Spain's beaches, i'm not even interested in Florida's beaches anymore!
You will enjoy yoir trip very much!
