    Newbie from LO Oregon

    Hello,

I've been reading for some time all the DIY forums here. What a resource! Then got to work and made a gathered end hammock. I used Amsteel cord and made a set of whoopie slings for it, and tree straps. Everything worked great. So much so my first time out I decided to go in the winter in snow. I wasn't cold although using a thermarest mat is a pain to keep on top of! But in the end it worked and had a great time and slept well.

Thanks for all your posts and I'm a convert for sure!

    Hello, Bruce.
Are you using a quilt, or a sleeping bag? Something I never figured out until years of trying to keep a sleeping bag on top of a pad - if you slide it inside the bivy sack, under the sleeping bag, it no longer slides out for underneath.

I used a Down sleeping bag and a down comforter over the top and a wool blanket and a 1" thermarest under. A cheap blue tarp for cover...and it rained. It would have been a mess without the tarp. I wasn't cold and ended up too hot at night and had to remove clothes. I think I'd like an underquilt better or something to sandwich the thermarest so it doesn't move. I tried to tie the thermarest in place but that failed, too much stress. If I would have tied it more securely I would have ripped the thermarest.

Another thing I did the other day was put together a no-tree hammock setup. I just used two limbs from a tree, 4 sticks for archors, and paracord. It worked really good. I have a video if anyone wants to see it, I'll post it.
