First... bulid a hammock stand for the spare bedroom. If she even _thinks_ you have messed up that machine you will be in the dog house for quite a while.
That said... you really can't do much to mess up a quality machine like that unless you do something _really stupid_. Learn the basics and let her watch over your shoulder until she is confident that you will not destroy her baby. That Janome is an excellent machine for "sewing". It is way overkill for "making gear". But that just means you get to ignore a lot of bells and whistles. Have fun.
