Height input on portable bipod stand...

Taking a page from a bipod stand I saw here for motorcycle use, I'm looking to build a taller unit so i can rid a tarp over it (at a decent height).

I have a camp or two coming up on a beach that has no vertical anchor points at all :O

I'm thinking two bipods with a line in between and a single line to ground from each end (two if one seems inadequate).

As for the bipods, I'll use PVC sections w/ wood inserts at the seams where they slide together (as in the original design I cannot find and credit now).

I'm wondering how high to have the bipod. Lower makes for fewer tubes to carry, taller makes for more reasonable tarp space.

I'm thinking "standing-head-height" at the peak.

    What says the membership? ;>

    Cheers

I'd be surprised if PVC was strong enough. What ground anchors are you going to use?

Someone has already done it...I can't find the post anymore, but he has some YouTube vids up for demo and how to build.

There's a post containing the video in "the turtle dog stand" thread, post #181

Also found on YouTube as the "stand-alone double-bipod hammock support".

I have a similar stand, built of steel square tube. Head high is just about right.

I remember seeing that video and watching the flex of the PVC, expecting it to snap at any moment. It didn't inspire confidence for me to hang my butt from it.

As far as the height, could you make the bi-pods shorter, as in just high enough for the hammock at minimal spread for the hammock. Then run up a single pole riser for attaching the tarp to.

Some of the advantages I see would be:
    • Shorter bi-pod so easier to carry.
    • Shorter bi-pod would reduce length and stress on guy-out lines and stakes.
    • Riser pole could be much lighter material.
