    Help Packing-up

    Hey All,

I'm new to hanging. Just purchased a HH Deluxe Explorer, Supershelter and Hex Tarp. What is the best way to pack it all up?
Also, Hex Tarp has not arrived yet - should it be attached to the hammock like the original tarp, or should it be hung separate?

    All advice is appreciated.

Hey DeerPath, Hello and Welcome to the Forums from Canada!

I tend to use a bishop bag for my explorer and snake skins for my tarp. As for hanging the hex, I would recommend a separate ridgeline for it not hung like the original asym tarp. Hope this helps!

Hey Deer path! Welcome to the forum! Your not too far from me! Other than the supershelter, this was my first set up. I always used the bag the hammock came in. As for the hex tarp, you can attach it to prussiks but I found I liked hanging it higher for airflow since it comes with lines. I pack my tarp separately from the hammock so I can deploy it first if rain is threatening. You can also use snakeskins on both to make things quicker. I never did that yet, but its a staple for some hangers. If weight is a concern, skins may be suitable for ya. Since the supershelter will not be used year round, keep it separate. You could put all componets in one stuff sack to keep them together. Its all about space in the vehicle of choice; backpack, boat, bike., etc.....

One thing I want to mention, my hex didn't come with a sack, so I found one to fit it and keep my tie out stakes with the tarp. Hope this helps with your question.

    Welcome from Gainesville!

I, also, use an Hennessy and their hex tarp (it's huge; you won't get wet with that one). For me, I've found that I prefer a DIY version of the Lazy Slug Tube for the hammock; it allows me to pack up the hammock, insulation, and any sleeping clothes that I need all at once. It also makes deploying all of that in wet weather a lot easier.

For my tarp, I picked up a bunch of Velcro cable ties (the 1/4" wide ones used for communications cable) and attached them to my continuous ridgeline (CRL) that I attach the tarp to via Klemheist knots. It lets me roll the tarp up and keep it that way until I need to deploy it. Some folks use mesh snakeskins (mesh, 'cause you want your tarp to dry as much as is possible before putting it back up) instead. Same idea.

I don't attach the tarp to the hammock (even the Hennessy instructions say not to), using a CRL instead. It allows for quick and easy adjustment of the tarp.

Anyway, that's the way I do it. It's not the lightest, nor the least bulky, but I do think it's the most convenient way to set everything up.

    Anyway, welcome to the forum!

Hello and welcome DeerPath. Regardless of how you pack the hammock, I'm a big proponent of packing the tarp separately and hanging it separately from the hammock. I always put my tarp in one of the outside pockets of my pack. That way it is ready for an instant shelter should a thunderstorm pop up. Plus by hanging it separately, you can set it up first if it is raining and then have a dry area underneath to set up your hammock.
