    Hammock in the Dorms

Hi I've been browsing the forums for some time, and I've finally had the need to post. I will be a freshman at the university of miami next year. As a proud hanger, I would like to represent the hammock community in the dorms next year. Unfortunately their policy on hanging things is pretty strict (can't even tack up posters) I've seen a duck tape mod but I don't think I have the angles for that. I considered putting up some sort of frame but I can't find one available that is 96" long or shorter. Here's a picture of the floor plan

the desk area opposite the bed is immobile and stands approximately 4 feet high and isn't very sturdy. It looks like I might be able to get 96" of space in place of the bed Twin xl 80 inches by 40 inches (I've put in a tentative request to have it removed ).

I've browsed plans for some of the stands on here that I could scale down but a major build is out of the question as I'm in an apartment now and most of my tools are back home.

    Anyone have any Ideas?

It might be impossible but it's worth a shot

Much appreciated (I'd hate to go back to ground dwelling)

I'm all for hammocks whenever they make sense...

But dude... you're going into your college years in Miami... take your hammock to the parks and beaches and use it as a conversation starter to meet chicks.

Leave the bed in your room for when you do.

Edit: I'm guessing I may be the only one here that won't give you advice as to how to accomplish this. I'm nearly positive you will get some ideas from others here shortly, so stick around if you really want to do this.

I just made a pipe stand made from 1 inch threaded galvanized pipe. No tools needed, really. You can make the top beam 10 feet, would that fit?

I have to agree with Willie on this one. You'll want the bed for when you bring home someone to cuddle with.

    You can either be

    1) The laid back dude who is so chill he brings a hammock out to the quad to study

    or

    2) The guy with the hammock dungeon

Also somewhat intrigued by this. Is there nothing duck tape can't do?
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

Silly question....you will have a roommate right?? Better figure out what this person's attitude is about having a hammock stand in the middle of the floor.

If you're living solo and can't move any furniture here's what I'd do...build a 2-legged turtle lady stand against the walls. If you've got 10'8" to play with on that end you could make an A-frame from a pair of 2x4s without a lot of complicated cutting and wedge these against the wall.

Bamboo would be be even more interesting (a conversation starter beyond the hammock itself). You could lash it together with 550 cord and have very little invested. Being down in Miami you should be able to source some nice bamboo from somewhere in the local area.

Pics would be appreciated when you get your rig set up. Good luck.

I hate to say it, but I have seen this technique in action... and work. But keep in mind it's like using a Puppy or a baby to pick up chicks! "With great power comes great responsibility."
