    Greetings from New Hampshire

I've been lurking this forum for a while. I'm pretty frequent hiker working my way through New Hampshire 48 4,000 footers. I'm planning to section hike some of the AT this fall with a friend on a SB through-hike. He's carrying a hammock and got me thinking about using a hammock set-up as a way to cut weight in my own solo over-nighting set-up and to ensure the same level of flexibility he'll have when stealthing.

I already own a Byers of Maine Miskito made by Amazona and while it may not be ideal I'm comfortable in it. I have used the DIY forums here for ideas on an improved more workable suspension. Just this weekend I assembled my tree straps from nylon webbing purchased from DIYgearsupply and fashioned 3 soft shackles using a guide I found on these forums. Next I will probably be a fashioning ridgeline or some whoopieslings although my tree straps are long enough that I can swing from two 8" trees more 14' apart and I'm not certain how much longer I really need.

I'm really looking forward to testing my creations and am hopeful that I'll love hammock camping. I don't know that I'll ever fully convert since even my three person backpacking tent is lighter when the load is split with a buddy or my wife. I guess time will tell.

Thanks for having me and for everyone's insight and passion for hammock camping it has inspired me thus far!

Welcome to the forum from Florida and New Hampshire.
I live in Florida but bought a retirement place in the Whites. We hike in all four seasons up there.

That's a big reason that I switched to hammocks. It's so hard to find level ground without trees, rocks (Granite State) and roots that finding a place to pitch a tent is a pain. Speaking of pain - that's what is in my back every morning after waking up in a tent.

You are going to like hammocks!
